The thematic topic based framework introduces the film and brings an authentic experience to the class, which in turn allows for learning through experience. This, in the opinion of many educators, is the key to a permanent increase in knowledge and change of attitudes. The emotions, associations and memories aroused during the film projection facilitate reflection on specific issues, and also create a favourable context for the presentation of relevant theories and the formulation of more general rules and regularities. They, as well as related competence exercises, can be the real goal of learning in the classroom. The film will pave the way for them, enabling a more effective and long lasting impact.
The films in the programme have been selected with the aim of making it as accessible as possible for young viewers; their length does not exceed 30 minutes, and the age of the protagonists and female characters is similar to the age of the programme’s addressees (12–18 years). The form of some stories may seem too sophisticated for viewers less familiar with the language of the film - however, we encourage you to take risks, as the reaction of young people may surprise you. If, nevertheless, you decide that in a given case it is worth facilitating the reception and strengthening the personal commitment of viewers, we will suggest how to prepare the screening. In the toolkit you will find many inspiring exercises that allow you to actively introduce the topic and interest your students. We are convinced that in the right context, each of the proposed films gives a chance for a relationship and emotional experience.
While all the Short Cut films are vital and appropriate for our young audience, some do contain upsetting subject matter, so please be mindful of the emotions these films can potentially have in young audiences.
